The Search for Santa Paws

The Christmas season is almost here and Disney is releasing a brand new Christmas film "The Search for Santa Paws".

The film follows Paws, a magical puppy, who was magically brought to life by Santa's elves, and who becomes Santa's best friend. On a trip to New York, Santa and Paws get into some mischief and Santa is left without his memory and Paws becomes lost in the Big Apple. Along with the story of Paws, the film also follows a young couple who have just inherited a toy shop from their Grandfather, and an orphanage of young girls who aren't allowed to celebrate Christmas. Through the spirit of Christmas, the characters come together to celebrate the joyous season and help Paws find Santa!!
The film is a lovely tale that will keep children entertained. The range of characters are diverse and entertaining and the special effects are up to par. There's even some musical numbers, mostly sung by the girls of the orphanage. When I sat down to watch the film I wasn't actually expecting any of the characters to sing, as the film doesn't seem to be promoted as a musical, and from the previous "Buddies" films there didn't seem to be any singing, so it was a little surprising. Nonetheless the songs weren't too distracting and the whole idea of the singing orphanage reminded me a little of the story of "Annie".
The film includes a fun cast including some actors and actresses that you might recognise from the Disney Channel. These include John Ducey (JONAS), Madison Pettis (Cory In The House, The Game Plan) and G. Hannelius (Sonny With A Chance guest star, Disney Channel Original Movie Den Brother). Also a part of the cast is Zachary Gordon (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) as the voice of Paws, Bonnie Somerville (Friends guest star, Without A Paddle) and Disney Channel favourite Mitchel Musso (Hannah Montana, Pair of Kings) as the voice of Santa Paws. But note that Mitchel's voice only appears in a small amount of scenes.

The DVD comes with some fun bonus features, some more appealing than others. The featurette "The HuckleBuckle Hero" is actually just a read-along with the original puppies from the previous "Buddies" films from the franchise. It's more targeted to the younger age group and children will enjoy reading along with the puppies. The DVD also includes a "Sing Along Mode", also more appealing to children, that let's you sing along with the songs from the film. The bonus features targeted towards an older audience includes deleted scenes and a music video. The deleted scenes are not displayed separately but instead are all played together. It isn't too big of a deal, but I usually like to have the option of choosing deleted scenes separately. The music video is a new pop/rock rendition of "Deck The Halls" performed by Disney Channel star Debby Ryan. It's a fun take on the song and will appeal to any fans of the Disney Channel.

Filled with musical numbers and even some valuable lessons, this film is a fun Christmas tale that will delight children and adults alike. Available November 10th from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.
